Billy Elliot. Beyond drama and ballet

Billy Elliot – one of the newest and greatest British masterpieces that is beyond an ordinary Theatre show. Billy Elliot musical is something new in the world of big Theatre (I would say) because of the new ideas and improved scene performance. Billy Elliot is that kind of shows that takes to another world of emotions and pleasure of seen.

So, what is Billy Elliot about anyway? What does this musical present? It’s a great show based on British famous movie Billy Elliot released in 2000 directed by Stephen Daldry. Billy Elliot is drama; it shows true life in Britainin the middle of 80’s. It’s about miners of the city of Durham, the struggle for living and big unemployment. Billy is 11-year old motherless boy who lives with his father, older brother and grandmother. Billy’s life is full with barriers and difficulties to reach his dreams. Billy struggles every day to achieve his dreams. His family, failures and all world stands on his way. But the movie really shows how your goal can be achieved even the whole world is on your way. Billy Elliots dream is to become a successful ballet dancer.

So, he starts to practice ballet with girls in local school of Mrs. Wilkinson as only boy in group. He practices ballet everywhere – at home, in the streets instead of boxing training. That’s where all difficulties start to take strength. Ballet dancing is the only way how Billy can feel free like the bird in the sky or electricity. His family is against dancing, they consider ballet is for gays. But one day Billy’s father saw sons dancing and decided to help his talent. Billy showed his brother and father how things can be changed with his perseverance even of loss of mother and massive unemployment. At the end of the movie Billy got accepted in the Royal Ballet School in London where he began new life in big ballet world.

The story of Billy Elliot summary is presented in Theatrical way in Original London production in 2005. It’s such a new musical that received numerous awards including Laurence Oliver, Helpmann, green Room, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Tony Awards for outstanding show, music, choreography, sound, lighting and new musical in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010. For such a short time since its premiere, Billy Elliot is known on Broadway production, Australian Sydney and Melbourne Theatre and also inCanada’s Toronto Theatre.

The Billy Elliot movie is drama and the show is also drama. Movie was so great that Theatre show needed to be even better. It must have to show movies essence to touch audience. And that’s why this original London show is so great. It’s true drama with masterful ballet choreography and scene design. Sometimes scenes are fulfilled with smoke clouds to highlight the ballet dancing. That’s where emotions arrive. Music by Sir Elton John makes whole show very emotional. One of the main things I like about the show is that cast actors are quite similar to actors in the movie. This makes the show even more outstanding.

Billy Elliot musical is great drama work. It presents all original movie essence and emotionality. It presents great ballet and outstanding scene. That’s why it is beyond an ordinary Theatre drama show.
